What Is a Ring Blower — and Why So Many Names?
The naming confusion has a simple explanation. Different industries adopted the same technology at different times and gave it different names.
- Ring blower — most common in Asia and among aquaculture and wastewater buyers. The name comes from the ring-shaped side channel the air circulates in.
- Side channel blower — the engineering term. Describes the geometry: air travels through a channel on the side of the impeller, not through the center.
- Regenerative blower — the physics term. Air is "regenerated" — accelerated, compressed, and re-accelerated — multiple times per impeller revolution.
- Vortex blower — describes the spiral airflow pattern inside the housing.

How It Works
A ring blower has one moving part: an impeller with dozens of small blades, mounted directly on the motor shaft. No belts. No gears. No couplings.
When the impeller spins, centrifugal force throws air outward into a ring-shaped channel machined into the housing. The channel doesn't go all the way around — it starts at the inlet port and ends at the outlet. As air travels through the channel, it passes through each impeller blade gap multiple times, picking up energy on each pass. By the time it reaches the outlet, it's been compressed to several times the pressure a simple centrifugal fan could achieve at the same impeller diameter.
Because nothing touches inside — the impeller never contacts the housing wall — there's no internal wear. No oil needed. No routine replacement of rubbing parts.
The same machine works as a vacuum pump. Connect your system to the inlet port instead of the outlet. The impeller pulls air out, creating suction. The outlet vents to atmosphere. There's no valving to change, no internal modification needed.
Single-Stage vs Double-Stage
All ring blowers use the same operating principle. The difference between single-stage and double-stage is how many impellers the air passes through.

The trade-off is straightforward: a single-stage blower moves more air but can't push against as much resistance. A double-stage blower sacrifices some flow to gain significantly more pressure or vacuum capability.
Most first-time ring blower buyers start with a single-stage unit. The double-stage models tend to go to buyers who already know they need the extra pressure — someone who tried a single-stage and found the back-pressure was too high, or an engineer who specified the pressure requirement from the start.

Where Ring Blowers Are Used
The application list is long because the machine is versatile. Here are the most common ones we see from our customers.
Aquaculture. This is the biggest market by volume. A single-stage ring blower sits on the bank of a fish or shrimp pond, feeding air through a manifold to diffuser lines at the bottom. The 1 HP and 2 HP models are far and away the most popular sizes — enough for a few ponds, not so powerful that you're wasting electricity.
Wastewater treatment. Small to medium treatment plants use ring blowers for aeration in equalization tanks, sludge holding tanks, and aerobic digesters. The oil-free discharge matters — no sheen on the water surface.
Air knife drying. Bottling lines use high-velocity air knives to blow water off bottles and cans before labeling. PCB manufacturers dry boards after washing. Food processors dry produce. Ring blowers deliver the high-pressure, moderate-flow air that air knives need.

The ring blower is not the right answer for every application. If you need very high pressure (>1 bar), very high flow (>500 m³/h), or 24/7 continuous duty at maximum load, a roots blower or turbo blower will serve you better. But for the vast middle ground — moderate pressure, moderate flow, intermittent to continuous duty, with noise and maintenance budgets to respect — it's hard to beat.

What is the difference between a ring blower and a roots blower?
A ring blower is quieter, cheaper to buy, and essentially maintenance-free. There's no oil to change, no belts to tension, no internal contact between moving parts. What maintenance does a ring blower require?
Almost none. A ring blower has one moving part — the impeller — and it never touches the housing wall. There's no oil to change, no belts to tension, no seals to replace. The only routine maintenance is keeping the inlet filter clean (check monthly in dusty environments) and inspecting bearing condition every 12–18 months. NSK bearings are typically good for several years of continuous duty before showing signs of wear. When they do, they're field-replaceable.
Can a ring blower be used as a vacuum pump?
Yes — every ring blower is inherently dual-purpose. The same machine operates as a blower (pressure) or a vacuum pump simply by connecting your system to the appropriate port. Connect to the outlet for pressure. Connect to the inlet for vacuum. No internal modification, no valving change, no tools required. This is one of the key advantages of side channel technology over dedicated blowers or pumps.
How long do ring blowers typically last?
With proper installation — inlet filter to keep debris out, relief valve to prevent dead-heading — a Slovdson ring blower typically operates for 5 to 10 years in continuous-duty applications. The aluminum housing and impeller do not degrade under normal service. Bearings are the primary wear item and are designed for field replacement.
